A Place for Morality and Ethics Within an AI World

This week, I had the opportunity to reconnect with my friend and former university classmate, Paul WILLIAMS. Our conversation centered around AI and the crucial role of morality and ethics in a rapidly advancing technological landscape.

Paul made a thought-provoking statement:

"As always, science and technology have provided us with the ‘hows’. Philosophers and Ethicists must yet again enter into the role of the postulating polemist, and step back and ask the ‘whys’ and the ever-unpopular ‘why nots’."

We decided to shift the narrative. Instead of solely focusing on how ethics can restrain AI, we explored what AI can contribute to philosophy and ethics. One significant advantage emerged: AI enhances our understanding of differing perspectives. In today's world, we are inundated with opinions and viewpoints, yet AI reduces our excuses for ignorance.

Here’s how:

- It maps our blind spots: Humans often struggle with nuanced positions or hesitate to acknowledge controversial ones.

- It is entirely shameless: AI lacks ego, reputation, or social anxiety, allowing it to explore complex dilemmas that we often avoid.

- It shatters the echo chamber: By presenting arguments without emotional bias, AI compels us to engage with views we might otherwise ignore.

Ultimately, AI is not here to replace ethical thinking; it is here to refine it. By leveraging AI to stress-test our perspectives, we can enrich our debates and prepare for complex issues, whether to challenge or embrace a broader range of viewpoints.

The future of AI is not just about faster computing; it’s about deeper thinking.
